I offer classes for parents to learn how to massage their babies. Touch is critical to life, especially to babies. Lack of physical touch has been associated with failure to thrive, slower physical and intellectual development, lowered immunity, lowered capacity to bond with other humans, poorer social skills, lack of impulse control, and increased propensity toward violence. Babies born by cesearean section have not had the benefit of experiencing the pressure on their skin while going through the birth canal that aids the immune system, and in particular can benefit from infant massage. A lot of research supports this, beginning with studies done early in the 20th century, and more recently done by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Medical School.
